THE SENSORY DEPREVIATION SWAMP:
“What we Don’t Know We Don’t Know Can’t Hurt Us”
an interactive installation by Lisa Rybovich Cralle and friends
A Two Day Event- December 13th & 14th from 6-10pm
*Time Out Chicago's Top 5 Things to Do This Week*
The deceptively titled "Sensory Deprivation Swamp" toes the line between sensory deprivation and over-stimulation by utilizing the ancient and mysterious phenomena of darkness and silence to alternately conceal and reveal what's going on beneath a dense layer of demonic fog. What at first appears to be a pitch-black and silent room slowly exposes itself to be the cricket-inhabited, Day-Glo Florida Everglades at midnight; full of strange and shadowy surprises that are only discernible once the viewers' senses adjust to the dark and nearly-silent environment.
The Swamp draws its inspiration from the Haitian and Cuban Voodoo/Santeria altars of South Florida, and its mutinous, claustrophobic character springs from the tradition of artists such as Kim Jones (Mudman), Yayoi Kusama, the Viennese Actionists, and Claus Oldenburg’s “The Store”. The S.D.S. is simultaneously a meditation on the over-stimulatingly infinite wonders of the 21st Century's "Information Superhighway" as well as a reflection on the relevance and nature of patience in today’s world. The initial experience of sensory “deprivation” upon entering the Swamp momentarily heightens the viewer’s experience of relaxation, anxiety, or wandering thoughts, using the mantra: "What We Don't Know We Don't Know Can't Hurt Us".
Lisa Rybovich Cralle and friends bring the Everglades to you, Chicago, as a gesture of reverse-tourism, and a hot and humid escape from your chilly winter. Please enjoy! FYI: Did you know that the city of Chicago used to be a swamp? The name "Chicago" is the Native American term for the wild onions that used to grow here. Bon appetite! Onion-flavored snacks will be served at both of the openings. Visitors are also encouraged to bring objects to leave in the Swamp.
Other artists participating in the Swamp include: Jessalyn Aaland, Aaron Brown, Elizabeth Chodos, Dominic Cramp, Jesse Eisenhower, Albert Herter, Evan Ladoux, Brian McNearney, Sam Meister, Clarke Selman, Nate Scheible... and more!
